Gallery of Simulations

Selected collections of MADflow case simulation results. MADflow has been validated rigorously with flume experiments on granular flow (e.g. by Koch et al., 1994; Gray et al., 1999; Lube et al., 2005; Sołowski and Sloan, 2013) and slurry flow (e.g. by Jeyapalan et al., 1983; Ancey and Cochard, 2008); analytical solution of submarine slide (Boukpeti et al., 2012); experiment on sand dam overtopping breach (Walsh et al. 2021); and the open-channel hydraulic erosion tests (Hanson and Cook, 2004). MADflow has also been calibrated with various field case histories of tailings flow (both process I and process II), slurry flow, debris flow, flow slide and rock avalanche and applied to case studies in Canada, Hong Kong, Italy and South America (e.g. Chen and Lee 2000, 2002, 2003; Crosta et al. 2004, 2006; Chen et al. 2006; Chen and Cunning 2021; Chen 2022; Ghahramani et al. 2022).

MADflow simulation requires basic knowledge of geotechnical, geological and rheological engineering, and some rudimentary exposure to numerical simulation and data-processing.

(*) This research was carried out within the CanBreach tailings project, which comprises five industrial partners (Imperial Oil, Suncor Energy, BGC Engineering, Klohn Crippen Berger and Golder Associates) and three Canadian research institutions (University of Waterloo, University of British Columbia and Queen’s University).
